MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Swedish Midsummer
WHEN: June 19th, this afternoon.
WHERE: Battery Park.
WHAT: The annual Swedish Midsummer Celebration is a glorious mix of blonds, flowers, booze (no one’s going to stop you from having a shot of Akvavit or two), games, a revelry set to celebrate the Friday closest to the summer solstice. Scheduled activities are as follows…
5:00 pm: Sing-along led by Swedish choir Sound of Sweden
5:30 pm: Traditional Swedish music by Daniel Dahlin and fiddlers from
the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis
6:15 pm: Midsummer pole procession and welcoming remarks
6:30 pm: Music and dancing around the midsummer pole with performances
by Barnklubben Elsa Rix and Swedish Folkdancers of New York
led by Jeanne Eriksson Widman
7:30 pm: Musical performance by Kristoffer Ragnstam
7:50 pm: Grand finale with Daniel Dahlin and fiddlers
NOTE: This picture, taken at last year’s is every bit as awkward as it would appear, but only because I was once set up on a blind date with the girl (Jennifer) that didn’t go to plan. Midsummer really is fun. See you there.
