QUICK: Make a Face (the Zoomdoggle Gurn-a-Thon)

Welcome to the first annual Zoomdoggle Gurn-a-Thon.
What’s a gurn? I hear you cry. A gurn, or gurning is the ancient English art of pulling very silly faces. Usually through a giant horse shoe. I’m not making this up. From Wikipedia: “Gurning contests are a rural English tradition. They are thought to have originated in 1297 at the Egremont Crab Fair”
I don’t have a horseshoe but I do have a face and a digital camera - and so, dear reader, do you.

This is my best shot. No digital manipulation or software trickery - just my face, twisted for fun. Try to top it. Make a face, take a picture, send it to funface at zoomdoggle dot com. We’ll do our best to put them up as they come in and, in a week or so, the best one (or only one as was the case the last time we tried something like this) wins a prize. How fun is that!?
Send us your pics today - we’ll announce the winner next week! Go!
FIRST ENTRY:

Well done Craig Morin.

Mine. Who’s next?
Honorary Doggler Shawn Feeney. Awesome. Surely someone can top it though.

Kristina Hoge… looking, er, good. Surely there are other people out there with, well, faces. Show ‘em off people.

Dan Rollman, scary, but fun. I know there’s better out there though. Show ‘em if you got ‘em.

Casey C, not bad, but I think some of these other entries got you beat. Who’s next?

Rob Birdsong, I think I recognize the guy behind you. A little interoffice competition is fun. Keep ‘em coming!

Stacey, bringing the heat. More, more, more. A fun face, a funny face, whatever, just make a face and send it in.

Jennifer Bennett writes: “I actually employ funny faces quite often in my job (teaching english to Taiwanese children) nothing shuts them up quicker than a very silly face from one of those weird “wei guo ren” (foreigners).” You don’t have to be a pro to pull a face though. Give it a go. Make it, take it, send it in!

Our first team entry, Marcello and friend. Maybe a couple, maybe not. Maybe it matters, maybe it doesn’t. Whatever it takes, just get in the action.

Tristan Cuchieri, not bad. It might not take the cake, but it takes balls to get in on the action. Glad you did. Next please.

Carolina Mendoza submits “Just for the pleasure of doing it!” Can’t argue with that, and loving the number of ladies taking the plunge. Keep at it. We’ll be checking the inbox again in a few hours and posting come what may.
Julia Roy takes a shot at the crown. Not bad, but probably not a winner either. Remeber all, making a face does not NEED to mean tongue stuck out. Scrunch, twist, stretch, shoot, and bring it.

Our youngest entry thus far, 6 y.o Gwynneth by way of Tyler Fracassa. So far might vote might actually go to Gwynneth. Who’s next?

Mandy D, black and white, our first artsy submission. Ladies, ladies, ladies… any gentlemen ballsy enough to gurn?

This one comes from the “Commander in Chief Allied European Forces.” Er, ok. Well done on the facial front for sure though. Definitely top 10%.

Chloe, well played. More, more, more.

Brandon Williams claims to have made this one while on a conference call. I think that earns extra points, right?

Kerry Crawford calls this her “fun Friday face.” Agreed! I think we’re stuck on 7, 8, and 9 though… someone kick this jam up to 11.

Paolo Pazzia answers the call with a bit of photoshoppery… not sure that this counts as a gurn, but we’ll take it. Faces people, faces. Make one, shoot one, send one.

Ria Osborne, now that’s what I’m talking about. Well done.

Thomas Limouze. Wowsers. Loving it. Not sure if you’ll take home the trophy, but you’re certainly giving me a run in the “bearded glasses gurn” category.

Constance James, our first opposing lips. Awesome!

Elizabeth H takes time off her vacation to twist one out for us. Yup.

Mark Griffioe, our first smush. Pushing the boundries is fun, pressing them together is gurn. Good good.

Chelsea pulls a folded-tongue face crunch. It’s a first for the Gurn-a-Thon, but we’ve still got a million miles to go.

Jim Higgins, setting the mark pretty high. Well played.

Mandy McCaslan, Zoomdoggle’s sometimes secret weapon, shows what makes her a champion.

Honorary Doggler and my new favorite video blogger, Scotty Iseri does it up in the office. Same as he always does.

Elisa B says, “That was the most fun i’ve had all day.” We aim to please.

Oh. My. God. Aaron Dignan kills it; broke the mold and then some. Who’s next to push the boundaries?

Evan Stein, that’s almost a finger-less, closed-eye Dignan. Nice.
Kaye Winter sends in mother…
…and son. It’s a fun-faced family affair. How fun is that?

Self-professed first-time Zoomdoggle reader Max Kinsella sent in the follow gem. The face is nice, the bedhead makes it even nicer.

On the other hand, long time reader (”I used to read the old blog”) Matt Cobb hated this shot, but said even sending it in was fun.

Jeff “I’m not the Jeff Green from Curb Your Enthusiasm” Green writes, “I went from a very scary face down to what I think is a funner one.” You’ve hit the nail on the head my friend. Surely someone can swing harder though.

“My wife was horrified at this picture…right before she started laughing,” writes Bob DeSilets. We’re right there with her Bob, it’s a fun one. Laughing is good, entering is better. Who will answer the call next?

“Notice the multiple chin folds coupled with the demented look,” writes Chad. Yep, I’ve got a lot going for me.” Agreed. It’s a good one!

“This is how I look when my nose gets itchy,” explains Steven Rosenthal as he pulls what appears to be a perfect nose-pick / opposing lip combo.

Spike Jones, an inch away from bursting a blood vessel it would appear. Well worth the effort though. That’s one for the history books for sure.

Alyssa Lee Wilmot and friend rock the Double Clover-tongue…

… while Brian Foley does the One-eyed Angry Lip Drop. NOTE: Naming these has become my new, favorite, fun thing to do. Feel free to name ‘em yourself before sending though if you’d prefer.

Jason Iselin writes, “this is the face a gentleman makes when he sneezes while peeing and makes his weenie explode.” Fair enough. We’ll call that a Shrieking Turtle. Don’t stop now people, the competition is just heating up.

M delivers a near-flawless Sideways Lip-Purse.

Hazel B does the Gecko. Love it.

Mercy calls this her Amy Sedaris Tribute Face. Well named. It’d be hard not to see that.

Brandon Jones rocks the seldom seen Cross-eyed Wind Tunneler. This is great. Don’t stop now people.

A Paige Kruger pulls a Half-Bitten Einstein. Loving it. Next.

Samuel Tidwell gives us a before and after, so we know he’s actually making a face. Ok, yeah, I see it now.

Kara Kronenweter gives us a Pre-Sneeze Elvis.

Collette Parks points out she’s got the same glasses as Julia Roy, then pulls what we’re now calling a Surprised Monkey Roy. Any more?

Meg from Staten Island: One girl. Two very different faces.

Emely originally from Japan, now in Chicago, rocks another Cheek Squeeze a la Dignan. Fantastic.

Greenman, thanks for sending us you “green face” from greenface72@gmail (who are the other 71 green faces, I wonder). Amazing. As is that basketball behind you. Limited edition promo-item, yes? Never seen that before.

Jason Iselin comes back for round two with a twisted mind reader. Anyone else?

Jake, you need to warn me when you post this! I just gave myself a fright - by surprise…how meta is that?
Come on the Zoomdogglers, give it a go if only to lessen the public humilation I’ve just put myself through….One man pulling a silly face is a fool. Many people pulling a silly face is a movement!
April 15th, 2009 at 11:24 am
@Floyd, sorry about that. There I’ve evened up the horror. Who’s next?
April 15th, 2009 at 5:35 pm

April 15th, 2009 at 7:02 pm

chirp-chirp, chirp-chirp
April 16th, 2009 at 7:18 am
Floyd, if this even keeps up at one a day I’ll be proud as punch. Shawn Feeney sets the bar pretty high… so has everyone really.
April 16th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
Bless you for the go Kristina - but mother of god! Shawn! Mate! That looks like it hurts! LOL!
April 16th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
haha, it doesn’t hurt - my skin is almost unnaturally elastic.
April 16th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
Floyd, it’s starting to catch on… maybe if I jump it back to the front page tomorrow we can really kick this thing up a notch.
April 16th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
@jennifer - you can tell you’re a pro - I was laughing quite hard at your effort. There are some other good attempts but your one is fab. I bow down with gurnic respect
April 17th, 2009 at 8:24 am
It was hard deciding between my various goofy faces. Haha, thanks for the “compliment”. Yours is quite stunning. I’ll have to try that one tomorrow.
April 17th, 2009 at 10:39 am
@Jennifer - it’s my Patent pending “woodchuck” face

I don’t think a giant horse shoe was ever involved. They use a ‘horse collar’ - like a dog collar, but for horses, something for attaching to the harness.
This is a simple British past-time invented by simple British people with the implements they had laying around. Giant horses weren’t very popular at the time.
April 17th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
I think the best part of this is seeing the faces of fellow Zoomdogglers for the first time in such a silly setting. It makes for an awesome introduction
April 17th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
I have one! but where do I send it?
April 17th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
This is exactly the kind of humiliation needed to start the weekend with!
April 17th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
congrats on the shout out at boingboing.net!
April 17th, 2009 at 9:07 pm

April 17th, 2009 at 11:49 pm

April 18th, 2009 at 9:26 am
Man alive! I had no idea the previously mysterious Zoomdoggle Nation were full of such rubbery face-aches!
Jim Higgins - that “hit on the head with a mallet” face is ace!
April 18th, 2009 at 10:01 am
[...] kids is just good fun. In this spirit, Bunch would like to point your bunch to Zoomdoggle’s Gurn-a-thon. What’s Gurn? Well, according to Wikipedia: “A gurn or chuck is a distorted facial [...]

Got that Sunday eve blues - you know the vibe - a few hours before bedtime, end of weekend / start of week. Scrolling through this clan of fools has totally made my night.
Well done one and all for being game to do this - if other viewers have been laughing as much as me, then it’s been worth while.

XD
April 20th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
@Jake - never mind dealing with Fortune 500 companies and trying to earn an honest crust - you have silly faces to post! Get to it!
I’d hate to think all those years at college went to waste
PS - can we print them all out and choose the winner over a few ales?
April 21st, 2009 at 12:01 pm
@Paige. I agree, Matt Cobb gets my vote - I love it. Stacey is also pretty special.. Both make me giggle whenever I look at them, can we make this into a book? Imagine, whenever you get irritated or upset you can pull a little book of funny faces out of your pocket and immediate relief!
