MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Rental Car Rally
I missed last years trip from New York to Montreal. This year – San Fran to Tijuana – I will not be deterred. The date is May 15th. The cost is $250 per car. The trip is expected to take 36 hours. The fun is off the charts. The details are as follows:
There is no set route, but each team must hit pre-defined checkpoints, the locations of which will be provided in the rally booklet given to each team at the starting line. Each team must provide photographic evidence of each checkpoint. No photos = disqualification. Each team is scored by a combination of odometer reading, team style, and hijinks (details below).
As for the rules… Don’t speed. Obey the local laws. That’s about it.
Scoring is on a 100pt scale, with judges using the following wonderful maths:
Odometer [50pts]
They take your odometer reading at the start and finish lines. Choose the shortest routes between checkpoints. Points are awarded on a sliding scale: the lowest reading gets 50pts, while progressively higher readings receive progressively fewer points.
Team Style [40pts]
Style is judged by originality of the costumes and attention to costume detail, plus metaphorical consistency between the costume and the team’s rally vehicle. The 30pts are split evenly between personal costumes (15pts) and vehicle (15pts).
Freelance [10pts]
Whether jumping a canyon or robbing a bank, spectacular feats of daring-do will earn your team up to 10pts.
Winner takes home $2500. Seeing as I’m without car, anyone looking for a teammate?

I once made that same drive in 6 hours. There’s really great inland shortcuts. Let’s assemble a team!! Oh, and my parents have a house in TJ. I’ll throw a big Mexican barbecue for everyone! Ooh that would be so much fun!!

This sounds like crazy fun. I would totally be down for this, but I’m going to Honduras the week before and won’t have the extra dough for the entry fee.

Robert, buhbee, get some friends together and split the entry cost. Four people = $62.50 each. Peanuts!
