FUN VIDEO: Quick Change

Magic is fun, and so is keeping up the illusion, but I’ve got to know. If anyone has a clue how this is done, lemme know. Her hair changes at one point, but that doesn’t quite explain it.

there is more than one way it is done, and I know only two, so I can illuminate very little but give a good idea as to how it might be done. from here on out, magic spoilers for those of you who don’t want to know how it’s done.
The first way is rather obvious, but tricky to pull off, and that is the tear away clothing, similar to “stripper pants” with the snaps along the legs so you can pull them off in one solid yank. in this case, the clothing not only needs to be taken off, but stashed. in all that rippling fabric, there is plenty of room to hide a dress in, so it can be done. I figure strong magnets come into play to hold a garment in place along the cloth, but then again, a good velcro could be used too.
The other way I know is rather interesting, and difficult to pull off without obvious markings to orient oneself with. in the way I learned it, it was a simple hula hoop with two layers of tissue paper with a dress sandwiched in between. the dress is sandwiched so as to be flat in the way that one would put it on, i.e. with the dress positioned so that the act of pushing through the tissue paper pulled it over your body the right way.

I’ll give you those would work for most of it… but what about the end with the glitter?

  3. will says:

the sheer AMOUNT of glitter would allow for the same effect of the billowing cloth, and as it piled in one spot, it could easily cover any fallen garments. the trick to THAT one is timing and not taking the dress off too soon or too late. i think THAT is why the music was playing; more as a way to keep everything timed properly than to add music to the show.

these guys did their thing at a halftime show i was at a few months ago– it started off like they were taking off clothes with the “stripper pants” method mentioned above… but when it got complex, we ALL were blown away. no one could figure out what they were doing! even the hula hoop method sounds too hard for the glitter trick they do.

    Actually, it’s not very complicated…
If you look closely, the first three are tear away, as has been said before. The dresses are stashes away in whatever place they taken off in.
Starting with that little green outfit, you’ll notice that the skirts get longer and longer, and the tops skimpier and skimpier. In fact, every “next” skirt is folded up in the “current” top. During a transformation, she pulls down on her top (hoping for no wardrobe malfunction :) ).
So, from the green to the purple dress, the green top (which is purple on the other side) gets snatched down, and becomes a purple skirt, revealing the purple top.
It’s the same concept for all of the dress changes from there on, but if you look closely, you can see it well during the green to purple switch… you can tell the purple color is coming from the top.
That’s why she’s much bustier at the beginning than at the end…

I read the explaination of the quick change artists somewhere when I first saw this video. Now I can’t find where ever it was that I read it.

Anyway, from what I recall, it’s basically what Will said. If you watch, you’ll notice that her outfits start with short little skirts and more covering tops, and gradually change to longer skirts and skimpier tops. There are little tabs that she (or he) pulls strategically to release the next change. She’s basically wearing all of her outfits flipped upwards on her top half. She pulls a tab and a layer flips down to reveal a new outfit. The new outfit will have a longer skirt than the last one, because it’s covering the first outfit. Sometimes she just ditches a layer completely while the new one flips down (these will be the times she’s completely hidden). If you watch the video carefully, you can see a few instances where you see her hand start to move towards he back right because she gets hidden…this is her preparing to pull a tab. Sometimes he helps her out. Look at the change around minute 1:00…the guy puts the hoop over her with the handing fabric…you clearly see him touch her back and give a tug…and you can also see the new purple dress falling down to cover the turquoise one. Again, the first outfit had a bulk top, and the new outfit has a longer skirt. Just watch the video with these things in mind, and it makes sense.

    Here, I found it:

Much more in depth. I don’t think they mention her hair change….but note that her brown hair is longer and shaggier than her blond hair…and it changes when she is covered completely. A wig, of course.

For someone who loves fun so much, you should realize that not knowing how the illusions are done is most of the fun in magic!

Of course, as the daughter of a magician, I already know how most tricks are done. Magic is no fun anymore!

Regardless, still impressive to see pulled off.
