You Send The Address,
We’ll Send The Love Letter!
It all starts with a love letter written to me from a girl I haven’t heard from in a while—and actually, truth be told, a girl I’ve never even met. I’ll spare you the details, but it’s been years since I’ve gotten a love letter, and just the act of opening it (we’re not talking email here people) made me happy. Really happy. You could even say it warmed my heart.
So when I woke up the next day to find New York colder than it should be this time of year, it kinda got me thinking. Thinking got me talking. And, wouldn’t you know it, before long, me and desk-mate Laura had each written a few love letters ourselves, taken them to Kinkos (arguably the most hateful place on each) ti run off copies, and headed out into the cold to warm the hearts of some complete strangers.
The letters said things like:
“Dear Stranger, You look fantastic in that coat. Someone had to say it. And I figure that someone might as well be me. Love, – Another Stranger”
And
“Dear You, I know things have been rough, but they’re only going to get better, I promise. How do I know? Because you’re awesome. And I’m not the only one who thinks so. Thanks for brightening up my day, by doing that think you do. Love, – Me”
Some people were uncomfortable. Some people gave us hugs. One guy asked Laura out and, well, at least 3 out 10 flat out refused to take whatever it was we were handing out. It didn’t make us any warmer (in fact, my hands are still too numb to edit the video), but it did spread joy, and just because we had to come inside, doesn’t mean we’re done:

UPDATE: Having talked it over (and because our newly minted interns don’t have all that much to do) our goal is to send 1,000 of them… so feel free to send a friends address too.
UPDATE 3/17/2009: At this point Zoomdoggle is no longer taking addresses. If you’re on the list (or submitted an address that hasn’t posted yet), you are on my to do list. It’s just might be a while. At pressent over 500 have been sent, but it’s taking some doing.

Hey jake-
I am avid follower of your site. I wrote you an email once just to see if you would write back, you did. Thus, you are forever in my ‘even-though-I’ll-probably-never-ever-meet-you-and-you-are-famous-I-still-reckon-you-are-totally-cool-and-down-to-earth’ box.
Anyway, I just signed up to get a love letter. I have been totally bummed about work lately and a letter would totally cheer me up. Then I got to thinking, there’s a certain romance and utter fun-ness about getting an actual letter in the mail. It’s old skool and harkens back to you know, sending letters in the mail.
What about hashing out a list for strangers to send letters? You know kinda like the mrs. milky’s fourth grade pen-pal efforts (she really was my fourth grade teacher). Set up some rules, like a limit on number of words, must be hand written, etc. I’m in. I think it would be fun to send a joke or pick-me-up to a stranger. Unfortunately, you have the hard work to figure out, blinding the address’ do people want to send their mail address’ to a bunch of crazy strangers?

We met at Green Drinks the other night… I half thought you were joking, or at least were hyping this story… but, nope, all true… Love it!
I’ve told several people about this ‘love letter’ project since and everyone agrees, It’s great to spreads good vibes and smiles, and I don’t know anyone that doesn’t like that (except maybe that curmudgeon down the hall, but I suspect he secretly wouldn’t mind a random love letter too). I agree that letters and even cards now are becoming a lost art. I love to write to others and have had to get used to the fact that people rarely write back. On paper, anyway.

What a lovely idea…and just think…if everyone sent just a half dozen love letters, think of where the world would be…maybe it would help end the hate, build instead of tare down, make someone who has had a hard day or year smile and feel valued. I just read the article about you on ABC news online. My first thoughts were how wonderful it would feel to get a love letter from someone. As a single mom, your life is about your child ( a now 4 year old child born 13 weeks early). Good for you!!!! I would like to think that I am like you. I like to make people feel good. I don’t ask for anything in return, I never have. My random acts of generosity are from my heart, not for anything else. (We live in a small town with no work, when someone has a life altering experience…i.e. a house fire… I secretly help, it may not be much, but it is something). I know I have made a little bit of a difference in someone’s life. I think it is wonderful that you do these “little” things that can change a person’s life….I know that they do. I have seen it from my own experiences. From a complete stranger….I am proud of you and I love you too!!!

This is wonderful. The last love letter I can recall receiving was six years ago, with the exception of Christmas cards, of course. I think what you are doing is so fantastic. I live in New Hampshire and lately we have had quite a rough time here. A good chunk of the state was blacked out for a few weeks (some of us still are), and of course it has been snowing like mad. in outset i decide to classify some of shocking crimes about us.all of them have performed by some of satanists:
1-to make blind my father and tortured him for years and killing him finally.
2-to madden one of my brothers and sicken him too.in near future he will sacrifice.he was not crazy at all.he was accepted as medical student in tehran university with excellent score.he was similar others.one of his most important problems was his sexuall standard.i mean if he had sex with female his faintness could recover considerably.but a lot of persons had jealousy about our family living and they divert realities and declared that he need to psychopathy. my parent was very candid and naive.but some of persons in my environment were like as wolf.and they increased his faintness skilfully.they concentrated all of their efforts for our family frustration by calamities imposition. they were very filthy,cruel,…in anyway my brother went to psychiatrist .also he was not mad relative other iranian people,but psychiatrists madden him and they were very fool,ignorant,…in recent years the satanists sicken him too.i think he will sacrifice soonly.
3-to made lost my other brother in war times.his lost still is enigma!he has lost for 26 year.
4-to debase my personality from my childhood by means ignorant persons.

Okay so I got one of these in the mail today and was completely freaked out! I live in Wisconsin, no return address, not addressed to anybody (just my address on it) and then inside of it this odd love poem… I thought it had anthrax in it at first but I guess now it’s just some random act of love.

Hey my sister is very quiet and doesn’t smile enough. She is 17yrs old, today’s her b-day actually!
Well, I spoke with her on the phone and she just seems unhappy. She has this speech problem that’s not visible but you can hear it. She’s really smart, but quite shy and doesn’t have a lot of friends. She has kept herself this way I think because of her issues and she is also very self-conscious. She lives 3hrs away from me and I don’t visit much because I have a business and a child to take care of, and it’s a long drive for me.
So, I ask if you could send her a letter that tells her all the great things to smile about. Careful not to freak her out, wondering who its from and all. You can even say that a friend of hers thought it would be nice for her to get this letter…something of that nature.

Saw your blurb on the ABC News webcast and just had to write to tell you how wonderful what you are doing is. As an old lady of 50, raised by my parents to write thank you notes, to send birthday cards, holiday cards, you name it, it’s nice to hear someone else valuing the joy sending a card or letter brings. In this world of technology and being a techie by profession, I make my own cards and still send every one I know a card whenever I can. I write them for the classic reasons, but I will also write a note to someone who’s just moved into a new place so that the first thing they get in the mail isn’t just junk mail or a bill, or I’ll write a get well card for a broken heart. I remember resisting the process as a child, but now, I hear from my friends who get these notes and cards and they thank me for brightening their day because they got something in the mail from me. It’s then that I thank my mom (my dad passed away many years ago), for teaching me to do this despite my resistance, because the joy I get from others is SO rewarding and satisfying as much as getting one myself is. So, I wanted to tell you to keep doing it. I applaud you for giving a stranger something tangible to hold and to read over and over again. It’s a joy that costs as little as a postage stamp and it’s a lost art that’s disappearing. Thank you.

I originally signed up back in November, then later feeling disheartened that I may never get one I follow-up in early February.
This morning I received news that my 47 year old best friend of 24 years was abducted from her home. I needed to get out of the house and take a brisk walk to get some air and coffee and to think. As I was leaving the house, there they were……I received a letter for what I assume was my sign up in November, another from my follow-up in early February and believe it or not I received a V-day card from a stranger who says she read my follow-up e-mail and thought I could use a “little note!”
Talk about “just when you needed it!!” Thank you so much and please keep my friend in your prayers that she will be returned to her loved ones safely.
