Jake’s Cup Contest
Styrofoam cups. Where most people see little more than boring coffee cups to gnaw on (I can’t be the only one biting the edges) artist Tara Donovan sees pure potential. Is it any wonder she won a $500,000 “genius†grant from the MacArthur Foundation?
It got me thinking though… Zoomdoggle readers are smart (maybe not a half-million-dollars-smart, but, you know). That said, whoever posts the funnest, most creative thing you can make or do with a single, simple cup, like the ones found at work (links and links to pictures are more than welcome), by the end of the day today, wins $5. If the winner is located here in New York City, I’ll personally drop by their office to make the hand-off before week’s end.
Sound fun? Take a second to ponder it over… and…. go!

NO COMMENTS. Not even one?!?!?! No more trying to be clever for me…

Pshaw, it’s the middle of the week! At least I’ve been super busy and had people over after work, just NOW I’m free to do anything, and it’s almost midnight here! Right now I need something to eat, desperately. Will try to come up with a cup shot while I survive.

As well as my chopped up fingers.

oh zoomdoggle, my old friend, oh how i’ve missed you. been a rough day but seeing your smiley face at the end of it makes up for all the hardships.

Hard to pull this off at work without people knowing that I’m not really doing what they’re paying me for… By end of the day, you mean midnight? Or just the end of the work day?
October 23rd, 2008 at 12:33 am
Well it’s after midnight, which unfortunately is when I start checking Zoomdoggle, but I’ll throw some up anyways.
Though since I’m just linking to cool ideas, I don’t think I should qualify for the $5

(technically a paper cup… but it could still work!)

http://www.instructables.com/id/05-Toy-Hovercraft–Helicopter/
There was one about making a cool looking lamp from it that looked sort of like Gobstoppers (the ones from the movie, not the round candy) but I can’t find it…
Ideas that I personally had but don’t have a camera to capture were things like drawing faces on them and putting them over random things. Like here I’d put them on various antennas, probably the pencil cups, make them look like they’re eating the pencils. Maybe set up something on my boss’ desk to make it look like there was an epic battle between the cup people and the pencil people.
Another thing that could brighten someone’s day would be to write funny messages on all the cups in the stack next to the water cooler. Nothing on the rim of the cup obviously since I actually don’t know of anyone who DOESN’T chew on the rim
You could carefully tear apart a few cups and reconstruct it into one giant (probably unuseable) cup and label it “Frankencup”
Heh, I could use the paper from our plotter to make GIANT paper cups and try to fit them next to the water cooler.
Man… why do I have to get all these ideas right when people from Corporate might be coming in so I can’t use any of them
One of you guys has to implement some of these in my name!

Without a response, I’m gonna assume the deadline is midnight and because I just now got around to this I’m gonna also assume you meant midnight pacific time, right Jake? So here’s what I made: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9097763@N04/2966534520/ it’s all made with scissors, tape, a (Han) Solo cup, and just a pinch of inner-nerd. May the force be with you!

Whoa, what a pleasant way to start the day…
Blake you slipped in under the wire (kinda, it says the comment went up at 2:52, but who cares, the Vader Cup is rad), I think Kolar takes the win with both quantity and quality. (Wait, scratch that bit about quality, neighbor Mike is saying his vote goes to the Vader cup). Hum. How’s about we call it a tie? Both of you send me your an address and I’ll send you both something worthwhile (valued at $2.50 or more) in return.
PS: Boll, what’s with the fingers?

Just a kitchen mishap: http://andreasaronsson.com/2008/10/06/knife-meet-hand/ It affected me more than I first anticipated though, and the experience of it all has changed my perception of reality itself. It became much more real.
Too bad it got so late yesterday (Sweden) when doing the cup shot, I was really exhausted and just wanted to go to bed, so it was a forced event! My creativity is the best when it happens spontaneously :3

Awesome! I’ll take a tie, that’s great! And on the technicality of my late night rationalizing (3am NYC = Midnight LA). It’s always midnight somewhere
I’ll send ya my address right away.
October 23rd, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Send it to me and I’ll, um, well… I’ll figure something out.
It should be noted that this last comment was completely uncalled for. But if my calculations are correct, putting it in will make what I worried was a failure of a post, into one of the popular articles in the right column.
October 23rd, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Ah no way was this a failure of a post, Jake – it’s really the first one (of what I hope will be many) that called me to action and made me make stuff! I’m not just posting about joining in on the fun – I’m actually making some myself.
The way I see it, that makes me an official Doggler now.
If that isn’t success, what is?!
October 23rd, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Totally agree with Blake, I thought it was a great idea! But don’t live in the US. And had no styrofoam
October 24th, 2008 at 2:29 am
Definitely a great idea! Look at it this way, because of this post, my office will be decorated in various cup decorations! Hmm… come to think of it I still haven’t used the “make a face” sticker things I got from thinkgeek…
