Going Big With Papercraft

I was sitting at my desk last night, getting ready to go home, when I had a thought: Why is paper-craft so small? I mean, if folding is fun, shouldn’t that fun be able to scale too? Wouldn’t folding something bigger be more fun? So I created a system… Admittedly it’s a system that could probably use some refining, but a system none the less. Follow along.

STEP 1: Find a foldable you’d like to fold. This one came from Folduscanidate.com, but it could be anything really. No matter what you choose, print it out for reference.

STEP 2: Run the image of your foldable through Rasterbator… one of my favorite websites on Earth, something I probably should have mentioned long ago and probably will again soon. Anyway, Rasterbator both rasterizes images (makes them out of dots, but you can change the dots any way you like) and scales the image so that it can printed across multiple sheets of paper. Having never done this, I started out small(ish), printing my single-sheet foldable across 16, but the sky is the limit. Really, do wild. Next print and lay them out in their proper order.

STEP 3: Apply tape, lots. I suggest a good, hearty packing tape. Remember, the bigger you get, the harder it becomes to support. Apply tape with that in mind.
NOTE: If you really want to make it pretty, cut the edges of the paper down to just the printable area of your printer. In doing so, you can avoid those big white lines. For a first run though, I kinda liked them.

STEP 4: Cut out as you normally would.

STEP 5: Fold as normal.
NOTE: I never noticed just how “boot cut” these “boot cuts” actually are. Go figure. They look totally different looking down on them. It just goes to show, life is all about perspective.

STEP 6: Don’t be scared to get up close and personal with your creation (in this particular case, I’m probably voting for mine). If you’re anything like me, the more time you spend, the bigger you’ll dream for tomorrow….

It kind of looks like you work in a cave. Where is this mythical place?

I never liked papercraft till I got a desk job. Not my cube is littered with them. If I made a giant one though, it would probably call too much attention to me. Then no desk job.

If you could build these out of cups, you could win your own five-spot.
