Chicken-Fried-Bacon-Doggle

In the past, I’ve spent full days doggling with a deep fat fryer. You can fry oreos. You can fry twinkies. You can fry pizza and hamburgers and even Coca-Cola. But after watching this video, I can’t wait to try making Chicken Fried Bacon, or road tripping to Texas to give it a try at this restaurant. You’ve got to see this stuff. It even comes with gravy! Deep fried doggles: They’re fun you can eat!

After watching this video, I had to try what would certainly give me heart palpitations. However, I believed that spending the last 24 years in central Texas had granted me a certain level of immunity to the constant fried and re-fried foods available here. I looked up Snook and, as it turned out, it was only 45 minutes away from me. So, I loaded up the pickup (I am in Texas after all) with antacids and headed towards the rising sun. The restaurant itself was a carbon copy of just about all small town highway diners: white tile floor, uncomfortable metal chairs, and the smell of hot grease in the air. I asked for the “world famous” fried bacon and my waitress obliged with a big southern smile and an “enjoy.” Long story short, I’ve had incredibly tender steaks and I’ve had a burger 12″ in diameter here in Texas, but I’ve never tasted something quite as delicious as that fried bacon. The only thing I haven’t done in Texas is one of those “Eat a monster steak in under 30 minutes and it’s free” contests. If any Dogglers happen to come across such a contest in the central Texas area, please shoot me an email and I will fully document the experience, and the inevitable aftermath.
